Most people stay in Sukhothai for one or two nights and visit the Sukhothai Historical Park, but there is in fact another beautiful sites that worth a visit. Among those is Si Satchanalai Historical Park, which is part of Sukhothai Kingdom dated back over 700 years ago. It is located about 50 kilometers north of Sukhothai town and easy access by buses.
Literally translating as the “Dawn of Happiness”, Sukhothai was Thailand’s first capital dated back between late 14th century and 16th century. During this period, Sukhothai accumulated wealth and prosperity, and reached its apex during King Ramkhamhaeng’s reign. He established guidelines for administrative, political, economic and religious practices. Most importantly, he invented the Thai alphabet signified the final emergence of a true nation of Thailand. In terms of arts, the Phum Khao Bin or lotus-bud summit stupa, exquisite Buddha images and Sangkhalok pottery are among unique Sukhothai-style architectural structure and artifacts that portray Kingdom’s timeless treasures. For these reasons, in December 1991 Sukhothai has been acknowledged by UNESCO as one of the world heritage sites (consisting 3 sites altogether: Sukhothai, Si Satchanalai and Kampaengpeth historical parks.
